So here's the short of it,
Half the Sky
And here's the long.
Tonight I'm watching another installment of Half the Sky, a documentary about women in other parts of the world. Last night the focus was on efforts to educate girls in countries. There's lots of research that shows that educating women is one of the best social and economic investments that can be made.

What changes this woman has brought about in her world! |
But tonight there is a segment which has been filmed in Somaliland - The woman at the center of this piece is a midwife who has spent her life working to serve the women and has built the Edna Adan Maternity Hospital. She talked about how dangerous it is for a woman to be pregnant in Somaliland - how many young women and babies died. This segment also addressed the issue of Female Genital Mutilation. Oh wow! I've known about this atrocity for many years, but the segment really made it much more of a reality. That's what good television really does, huh! It educates us - makes us more informed - makes us want to do things to change things.
This documentary is showing on PBS until October the 9th. Or if you aren't around a TV, it is free streaming online until the 9th. After that it's available for purchase.
Oh I hope you'll watch some of it.
